I have a digital thermometer for the meat itself but I want to install an analog thermometer for kettle temp for smoking. I've seen photos here with it just below the vent. I guess above the hook. Is that the right place and why?

Any advice?

I did this on a 2006 and it seems to work well.  You want to try to get as close to grate temps as possible and for low n slow you want the coals opposite the vent, food and thermometer.  Got mine on Amazon; it's a river country 3 inch.  Also did some 2 inch thermometers on a SJ and JJ.

So I guess Weber put them on top but for a new install best on the side under the vent?

@bamakettles like the port and hanger for the digital thermometer. I just run mine under the lid.

I'll post a photo when I'm done

What are you using for your thermometer hanger here. I have the same one and have been looking for something other than setting it on a table beside the kettle.

Straighten the vent tab, scrub everything with a Brillo pad and restore the wood handle.  New pic and re-post!

No, that thermometer is not calibratable. And it reads 190 on a boiling water test. Looks cool though!

I do need to fix that handle.

LOL, was just poking fun.... if you decide to go with the river country, you can calibrate it.  Small screw on the back for that purpose.

You guys!
I just get a good laugh out of those that hotly (sorry) debate a 10° difference in position with a thermometer thats about as accurate as holding a wet finger in the wind.
