...but the interior is rusted to heck. I've never cleaned rust out before...what do I use to tidy it up enough to put down coats of enameled paint?

Clean it entirely with a Razer scraper, dish soap and old rag, and 0000 steel wool with dish soap.  Keep hitting it with the steel wool to the the majority of rust off.  If you want it really clean you can do it in evaporust.  If not, just make sure it has as much rust off it as you can.  Then it is a choice for treating the bare metal.  Most people use oil and heat. You can also spot treat with high heat paint. If it is a non black kettle I would recommend the oil method.

they come painted out of the factory, don't they?

it's a black model, but I'm finr with the scouring the rust off and treating with oil. I live where it's extremely humid and often very cool...everything rusts.  :P

It's made of porcelain enameled steel.
Not painted.
You do not want to paint the insides.
Outside if you want to, but never inside.

I would really just use it, then if it rusts out, just buy another one for 10 bucks. I have a few sitting outside getting rained on now

Marzipan

so, what are my options for accessories?

better grills? cast iron? heavier duty stainless?
vortex?
baskets for offset cooking?

got the chimney in my cart, but I'd like a vortex and baskets to play with, but everything I've see is for the larger Jumbo Joe. :P

You could find a little stainless bowl and make a poortex, Idk if I have seen anybody with a Smokey Joe vortex, but I'm sure someone has done it.

Maybe try searching "mini wsm" also

Marzipan

yes...I could do that, but how the heck do you cut the top off?

also, any recommendations for the coal baskets so I can have more control for any offset cooking I'd like to do?

I won't be packing this around, so are there any mod's to bring back the bottom vents?

I used a grinder. I know someone made a smaller basket, out of a weber charcoal basket. Idk if it would fit a Smokey Joe though. If you found a "charcoal rail" you could probably get and indirect area, but the Smokey Joe is pretty small, Idk for sure if they would fit. I'm not sure if ive seen any SJ with a basket.but someone probably has one.

And what's up with your bottom vent?

Smokey Joe Premium's have no bottom vent...they're on the sides of bowl.
