The versus thread

Post your head to head grilling experiments.

Tonight I did 2 organic chickens. One on the 18 using the radiant heat method with the vortex and the other on the charcoal go anywhere. Both seasoned the same and both went on at the same time. Which one will be better?  I can tell from the sizzle that the radiant heat in the 18 will finish quicker. The ga has more smoke coming out of it and is cooking a little slower. Still impressive that you can fit a whole chicken indirect on it even if it lifts the lid a little lol. I’ll post the results later.

After one hour the one in the 18 is at 159 internal and the ga is 111 internal. The 18 might be done sooner but I suspect the ga will taste better. Who knows.

Cool experiment...
The radiant cook is probably the only thing I have never done with my vortex...Probably because I would have to wash the damn thing first...
I miss my GA grill...Still kicking myself for letting it go...

Go for it. No washing necessary. Mine have never touched the sides.

We just finished eating the 18 vortex chicken and it was incredible in all ways.

I knew someone was going to ask that. I don’t know. I bought a 2 pack of organic chickens from Costco. The ga has the smaller of the two. I’m not sure if weight but it was not a large chicken.

Ga bird after 2 hours. Internal in the breast is 155. Internal in thigh is 180. I turned it around to finish. The leg bone pulled out clean when I tried to move it.

The results.

Both were incredibly juicy and tender and had crispy skin. The ga had a slightly more smoky flavor. Neither had any smoke wood added. Just ro briquettes. The slower cooked ga looked better presentation wise but I preferred the texture and flavor of the 18 vortex chicken. Almost a tie but I personally prefer the radiant heat 18 vortex.

Really cool experiment, I have done several birds in the vortex and always loved them. Now, how about a bird in the vortex and one spinning above in a roti that would be interesting
Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill
