@SixZeroFour  -  Pat Pending also and looks like it has rubber treads.  Does it have plastic wheels or metal wheels?  I wonder if your Mediterranean is the same year as my Eastener and Weber was experimenting that year with this style of lid?

It was in really rough shape when I got it and had no wheels/legs/triangle at all so those were chosen based on the best info available. Based on your grill I guessed right ;)

Here is my Brave with the same flat spot. Pat pending, plastic wheels with rubber treads.  My newer red didn’t have the flat spot.

I don't really know offhand, but is the vent and the area directly underneath the vent normally flat or curved? Maybe this was just an attempt to make the vents seal better and/or easier. Matching two flat surfaces would seem to be easier than getting two curved surfaces to match. Even if that worked, someone may have decided the appearance or process to make flat area was not worth the improvement in function.

Probably spot on with that theory.  I prefer the look of the lid without the raised area.

Unless someone can provide an example of a 22" having this raised area, it appears this was only on 1971 era Pat Pending 18's with plastic wheels and rubber treads.  Probably as much information as were are going to get.

Cool & interesting.  Now I’m gonna have to check my Pat. Pending kettles.

Obviously looking for a Glen Blue (who isn’t?😂).

Looking for anything Happy Cooker, including any re-branded as Montgomery Ward.  I’ve amassed a nice collection, but I’m missing a few still.  Let me know if you can help a fella out🤞

Ok, now that is strange.  You would think there would be more of these out there if it was produced between 1971 and 1978.  I have quite a few 18"ers from that time frame and only one has had this peculiar raised area beneath the lid vent.  Why didn't all of them have it?  Why just a few?

@MDurso  - Curious as to your thoughts?

I am pretty sure that I have at least one with the raised area also. Unfortunately most of my kettles are in the shed and the doors are currently blocked by snow and ice.

Hey I found another grill with a raised area around the top vent. My H code flat top 26. Anyone else notice this on their 26”?

My guess is manufacturing error that wasn’t bad enough to get pulled from the line
