"N" code Jumbo Joe at the curb!

Always keeping my eyes open at the curb when driving around, I spotted a pile at the curb on a cross street of mine. So I cruzed around that block, and low and behold I find in the pile a Jumbo Joe! So after a good cleaning and maybe some new grates, what do I need to know about these things? I notice that the intakes are not below the charcoal..... and there is a little pan that goes under the charcoal grate?

I have one, great for camping, along with a Cajun Bandit rotisserie.

I'll take a stab at your questions. Weber made a Smokey Joe Gold (SJG, Outrider) in a 14" and the Jumbo Joe Gold (Outrider) in a 18". The vents are up on the side of the bowl and the nice lid lock is also a lid bale. I'm not sure what the pan is you found, I don't believe the US versions had internal ash pans.

I could be wrong on some of this, if so I hope to be corrected and learn a little along the way

Congrats!

Would this thing be considered a Smokey Joe Platinum?

Hhmmm, definitely looks to be a platinum.... but I found this bit of info.  Would cooking grates still be available?  It needs grates...

I'm not sure if the standard 18" grate fits the SJP or not.

From the research I have done,  it doesn't look like it.  I have a 18 ots in the basement,  I'll grab the grate and check it tomorrow. Looks like the grate is supposed to be a 70605. And I don't think they make them anymore.

This one is pretty crusty.  I don't think I wanna put any food on it.....

The current grate does not fit this grill but you can order them from Weber.  You just need to make sure the rep is clear on what you need. I ordered one about a year ago.

It will clean up nicely, you'll see.  Great little grill. I put a 4-hole top grate from a 22" kettle on the bottom of mine; great air flow and control with all three vent locations in the lower bowl.

Brush it off, put a fire under it & if the color of the iron oxide still bothers you, rub some cooking oil on the grate.

Just so you know, the grill you found is actually a decent height for grilling while you are sitting in a lawn chair.

It's a keeper!
