Suckling pig
« on: October 12, 2017, 02:59:01 PM »
Hello all, has anyone ever tried to rotisserie a suckling pig on a 22.5 kettle? I can seem to find any info on this. I'm looking to do a couple of hogs for my Boy Scout troop. Any help would be much appreciated.

I believe the Roti  has a 20 lb limit for the motor. If it fit, it would be interesting. Wish I could help.

Mmm. I think my cajon bandit rot can hold 25 lbs. I think you could do a suckling pig no problem. Tie it up a bit and push forks in tight. That'll be very good!

Suckling pig is usually 40-60 lbs. Don't think it will fit on a 22.
Anything smaller then that is a waste of a pig.

They won't fit on a 22"...

But a smaller suckling pig would fit on a 26" Cajun Bandit Rotisserie.

Here are two roaster chickens I did yesterday on my 26"...there was easily room for a 3rd and maybe a 4th (depending how tightly I packed them).

A true suckling pig is usually quite small.  Often what gets referred to as suckling pigs are just young pigs.  But to truly be a suckling means it still feeding off the mother's milk.  Apparently this makes them taste different than expected.  I think they "technically" max out around 10 or 12 pounds if I recall.  I read somewhere that finding them is tricky as there is no profit in it for a farmer, butcher etc.

I also recall reading (pretty sure it was on this site) that the the 26" kettle was basically designed around a suckling pig; so it should definitely fit!
Its amazing how quickly one weber kettle turns into more than a dozen!  Always open to grabbing something interesting so let me know what you've got!

A 22 is a bit small for a suckling pig.  Around here they are normally around 20-22 lbs. their length is a bit too long to fit on a 22" grill.

I'm torn.  I really want to cook a whole hog but I don't have anything that will accommodate a larger pig.

Cooking the little baby ones is a move I just won't do.  Not opposed to anyone else doing it, just not me.

Only time I cooked a whole hog (about 70 pounds) was in a la caja China. Luckily I just borrowed it from my brother. @swamprb has done it this way before as well I believe.
