Inaugural Rib Cooking Contest
« on: July 03, 2017, 10:31:58 AM »
Happy 4th of July!

Buddies and I decided to have a rib cooking contest. Will document festivities throughout the day.

Will be judged on taste, texture and presentation.

Challengers are rolling...

Had 3 judges scoring blind boxes for taste, texture and presentation.

Turned my box in before I remembered to snap a pic and was locked out of the judges' area so I couldn't get pics for comparison.

Big daddy's boiled baby backs took first.

Gonna be eating on leftover ribs again today.

I figured my boiled baby backs would place Last. Obviously a glitch in the matrix.

Does it mean "boiled" in the literal sense? I have only smoked ribs from the raw form, not boiled prior to smoking. Curious if there is an advantage.

Boiled ribs? I didn't think anyone still did that. We need a rib cooking intervention, stat!

turn in time was 6:00 pm.  there were 4 contestants.  two brought their smokers over and put their meat on around 12:30.  third contestant had to pre-cook hers at her place (in the oven) because she couldn't get to my house in time. i started the stock pot at 3:45 to boil apple juice, water and sweet vidalia onions. When it came to a rolling boil, i dropped the ribs in and let it go for about 45 mins. finished them on the grill with Sweet Baby Ray's for 20 mins, then let them rest in my oven which was set on 170 to keep them warm until the turn in.

it might not be the right way, but they were tasty and didnt last long after we put them out on the buffet.
