Vegetarian Grilling?
« on: May 20, 2017, 06:15:42 AM »
Since grilling is primarily about meat/fowl/fish, and the basic vegetables that taste so great caramelized over coals......I am wondering if anyone has used jackfruit to make the vegan version of pulled pork. I was just reading about it up in FB and decided to Google to learn more.   It reminded me that a year ago at a street food fair festival a friend got a jackfruit sandwich that was prepared as bbq pulled pork. It was good and amazingly similar to the real thing.

I might get some at a local Asian market and grill it up that way....just because I like to try new things and experiment.

Best advise is to feed your food natural ingredients. That way you know what your eating when you eat them.

 I've never grilled a vegetarian or vegan.   Do they taste like chicken?

Nope, not on the list, so probably not.......

I like vegetables....likely don't eat enough of them....

Had jackfruit before, it was OK, but I'm not really thinking of "replacing" things with items that might be a far stretch.....like to see what I can come up with considering the flavors & textures of the item itself.....although I did make Vegan 'Turds (Atomic Buffalo 'Turds) one time...

Give it a try & post back how it went....interested in what happens.... 8)

Actually @1buckie I try things for what they are....tofu is tofu, frog legs are just that, so jackfruit is jackfruit with interesting seasonings.  I posted about the reference to pulled pork, but lets face it.....things are what they are and no need to pretend it is something else. If it is nutritious and tasty, who cares what its name is, right?

@clarissa

Yeah, it's, I think anyway, more fun to cast those kinds of preconceptions (trying to MAKE something be or taste like an existing favorite) aside & use the item as the starting point......

Click that link above & you'll see vegan "bacon "style" strips & a few other things I used as sort of a tongue-in-cheek version of a meat lover's favorite BBQ app.....

I have been curious about jackfruit.  Read an article a few months back about a local raunt that uses it.  Haven't tried it yet.

My wife just got a couple books off of amazon.  Some great recipes that I hope to try-out very soon.

I'm never giving up meat …. But, I do like to experiment beyond the usual stuff that gets grilled on a regular basis.
Even as sides, veggies cooked on the grill are excellent, IMHO.   8)
