I'm dumb, I mean I'm really dumb when it comes to tools and fixing stuff.  But I searched and found this mod and when I went to buy 5/8 threaded rods to repair a SS Performer frame they looked way too big. The 5/16ths looked about right.  Am I missing something?

One of the things we've all faced with these frames (and Performers are included) is the rusted out star nuts in the cross members. This frame was no exception, but I came up with an easy solution. Using a long piece of 5/8" threaded rod, I found that a 5/8" washer is the exact size to fit inside the tube, and center the rod when you replace it. Presuming the star nuts are gone, sandwich a washer between two nuts, making sure there is enough thread on the end to fit through the cross member and allow an acorn nut on the outside.

Place the entire rod into the tube, and thread another two nuts and a washer onto the other end the same way. See how it fits into the tube? Cool!

Once the frame is together, put a temporary nut on the excess end and cut to length. FYI - you will need to enlarge the holes in the frame for the rod, it's just a little bigger than the original.

Then just back the temp nut off, add the acorn nut (I used a sealing washer) and that's it! Solid as a rock.

I did not repaint the frame as it was in pretty good shape. I did replace all the hardware with stainless.

Working on the fire box and end panels now, but they are slow going. Might resort to media blasting if I can find someone local. Should come together quickly after that. I'm excited!

That might be your answer, right there...

Very nice restore! Can anyone tell me if there is a tutorial, or a procedure somewhere on how to get the painted lids shiny without re-painting them? Is it the same procedure as used on the kettle lids?

Yup - same finish on these lids as any other. 0000 steel wool and Bar Keepers Friend will do the trick. You can use a razor blade inside to get the gunk/crust off before using the steel wool. The side panels use a different finish, and I usually take the lid completely apart so I can repaint them if needed. Use Rustoleum High Heat Ultra. Do not use that on the center (colored) portion of the lid though. Nothing with a porcelain finish can be repainted and withstand the heat in my experience.

Show us what you're working on!

@56MPG, thanks for the info! I was hoping it was the steel wool method and it is. I've only ever restored my Genesis Gold C, and that is stainless of course. My brother inherited an older Genesis type grill which is green on the lid and the controls on the right side. It has a plastic lid handle not wood. I plan on restoring it for him, and when I get started, I'll post some pics.

Beautiful restoration!   I just found one of these in my neighbors trash last weekend.   Does anyone know if the burner tube from a small webet spirit would fit?

Nope - these shorty burners are unique to the Jr. Others may have tried to shorten standard Gennie burners, but I have not seen anyone post whether that has been successful. How hard could it be? Someone out there please try this and let us know!

I just finished cleaning the lid and painting the box.  Going to order grates and flavorizer bars from RCPlameBuyer.  I'm hoping u find a stainless steel replacement burner from another grill that fits or a universal replacement burner.   Last resort will be to get a set of burners from a Genesis A and pay a welder to cut them.  I'll update when it's finished.

I'll show before and after pics once I figure out how to post them here too.

Easiest way is to use the smartphone app and post from your photo library. If you don't have a smartphone read this.

I love these JR grills. If one landed in my lap I would probably restore one too.
