Spatchcocked Chicken First cook
« on: April 10, 2015, 03:55:13 PM »
So I waited until last night to fire Ginger up and spatchcock a chicken. I seasoned the chicken with Old bay seasoning because that's what the wife likes.
Took the advice of some forum members and got gloves, wax starting cubes and a chimney starter.

Started the new chimney starter with some Kingsford Original

Put the seasoned chicken on the grill

Spent about an hour admiring the new grill while waiting for the yard bird to reach 165° F

Reached the desired temp and done, I have a thermopen for checking temperatures.

Plated with Buttered carrots. Thanks for looking :)

That's exactly how I broke in my first kettle. I was hooked and so was the rest of my family.

Whole chicken is a ton of fun. So many ways to do it (whole, spatchcock, leapfrog, etc.,). Pretty soon you'll be filling out the rest of the grate with sides and the whole meal will be done on the kettle 8)

Picture perfect; you made it look easy!
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Great first cook there. The only tip I would add is to get some disposable aluminium trays  (6x9 are the nice fit as I recall off hand) to put under your food when it's not cooked over the fire. This will save cleanup time and effort.
This is a fairly cheap hobby when you consider the time  with family and friends and how many meals are created.
