Sat. i picked up combo deal off of CL (older 18.5w/steel wheels,an older Smokey joe w/no markings on the vent besides a "c" and a charcoal caddy) and inside the 18 was two charcoal rails 8) so i thought why not try an experiment a little :o
I had some pork chops that needed to be cooked, so i set up my two 22s, one with the rails and one with the baskets.

I will apologize up front as i took no pictures of plated food sorry :(

First up is the rail setup:

And the basket setup:

Whoops how did that get in there?

Oh BTW i found out if you leave the bottom vents closed it don't work as well :-[

I love experiments ,And great photos
So what worked better rails or baskets?
After seeing that last photo I think I need to get some pork on my fork

Both have their merits i think, i will need to have more experience with the rails to render judgement.

I prefer rails, but I like the 3rd photo set-up most of all. Well done.

So...what's the verdict: rails or baskets?  what are the pros/cons of each?

Hogsy

I prefer the baskets easy to move around and empty at the end of a cook or if reusing coals it's easy to pick up the basket give it a shake to get rid of the ash then pour the coals into the chimney
With my roti setup I use a heat deflector and can leave the end of the basket poking out from the deflector plate so the juices hit the coals

I have to agree with Hogsy having used both, I like being able to move them around in the grill and that I don't have the coals up against the side of my grill

I prefer the baskets as well, much easier to adjust if you have to. Plus like said above, easier to dump after use!

What I like about the rails is you can put more briquettes behind them. What I don't like is that they are banked against the kettle that will eventually spall the finish. I use the rails on my old beaters and the baskets on the ones I want to keep nice.

Ive used both, I do prefer the baskets. Of course on the rails, you can adjust the amount of charcoal on one or both sides of the bowl. As for Scarlet, I like the top vents.......... :o  we need a :slapping myself in the face: emoticon. WOW!
