I was at the local HD the other day, and noticed both the 22.5 and 18 kettles they had on display used the old-style thumbscrew-type OT system, not the H-style. I thought they had all been changed over a couple years ago. (?) Were the display units that old?

That is odd, I will look around at my stores but I only see H-style.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

Check the vent code.  I know one of the HD's near me definitely has some of the older models on display.

probably just old display units.

I noticed the local sears has super old displays, and one of them even has a new handle (with old side handle)

I noticed this as well a few months ago. They all have old vent codes here.

When I bought my 18 WSM in late 2009, the store (Ace Hdwe) had the previous version on display. I pointed that out to them and asked what they could do price wise on it. The clerk spoke with the manager and they said they could come down from $300 to $250. I pointed out it was an older model and had some dents and scratches. They held firm.  :o I said OK, I'll take a new one then. But they didn't have one in stock.  ::) Anyway, point is they may have some pretty old units on display.

Our local HD has a couple DZ and DE floor models.
