I stumbled down the forum rabbit hole as I was looking for a way to use my Smokey Joe Platinum (DR code) more effectively in hot, fast, cooks for several people while camping or tailgating.   I always liked the grill, but it didn't maintain high temps like my Performer, so it ended up sitting in the garage.  Looking through several different posts, I finally settled on attempting the One-touch mod.  It turned out pretty well.  One cook so far, high temps easily reached and maintained.  I chose this method because I can still keep the new bottom vents closed and use it with just the side vents.  I'm looking forward to learning much more here!

Welcome from just outside Chicago!
I swear, when I score a great deal on a 26" I'll stop buying grills... So often.

That's a sweet mod. How does it cook with the stock vent holes wide open?

Thanks!  It would get hot but with the lid on, even cracked, it died out pretty quickly.   In doing some reading, some have said to pile coals up on one side, close that vent, and keep the other one open for a longer lasting hot fire.  I have yet to try that.
