First SSP, first redhead, first resto.
« on: May 17, 2017, 12:32:03 PM »
So after a LONG stretch of searching, I found a redhead SSP locally for $50. I caught it on CL an hour after it was posted and jumped on it immediately. It turned out to be a little rougher than I thought once I started taking her apart. I'll be picking your brains in the very near future, but for now here are some pics:

My red master touch has the same rust pits in the bowl. She still cooks well. That's a great score! Congrats.

What, if anything, did you do to stabilize the pits? She won't be a show-piece but I want to make it look as good as I can and stop any more rust.

Congrats on the find.  Looks like it will make a great cooker for years to come.

As for the pitting, swamprb posted the following pic in his wanted ad.  Looks like a winning combo to me and I'm going to try it on one of my kettles that has the same issue. How does that red hold up to heat @swamprb ?  If you paint, you can scrape off the excess with a razor scraper leaving paint only within the previously bare spots.  I used black stove paint on the a kettle years ago and it stopped any further damage and lasted a good number of years.

Looks good to me...itll cleanup nice..the ash sweep handle will need to be cutiff with a dremel..need 2-3 fiberglass cutting wheels..after that you are all set..disassemble..scrub and reassemble...clean ignitor contact points and buy replacement ss hardware before so you can assemble with ss.

The hex head is 7/16"

Ok. The ash sweeper is out. I'm thinking I may just knock the rust out of the pits and hit it with a high temp clear. Or would a mismatch of color not be noticeable since it's the bottom of the kettle? The kid is immaculate.

Also, the igniter for the burner is gone.

The bar that holds the ash catcher will take some elbow grease and a prime and paint. I'll replace all of the hardware with stainless steel.

The paint will start to darken noticeably over time.
I'd knock the rust down and dab a little vegetable oil on the spots to keep the rust at bay. Then just enjoy it.
Very nice, man.

Ok. So I'm cleaning the cart now. Should this film have been removed? It's pretty nasty now. I just can't find any literature on the SSP from Weber.
