Does anybody know where the ash pan looking thing goes on these little guys? I think this might be the right place but don't make much sense to me. On my 22.5 WSM there is something similar that goes outside the smoker in that same spot and serves as like a grease or drip catcher. Also how u guys getting these fired up? Fill the ring up a little less than full and put maybe a small chimney of lit on top? Thanks for any help.

you have it in the right spot, I just watched a video of a guy unboxing his and assembling...
CGA,GGA, jumbo joe, 3-18" kettles,22" blue,green,yellow and 2 reds, 1-22" lid mod for pizza, a genesis silver,2 Red SS Performers,2 26ers,1 red, 1 chief and a Ranch Kettle.

Wow. Very luxurious. My old 18 has no such refinement.

@HoosierKettle , and You just answered MY question, I have 2 18" WSM's, one has the external shield, the other doesn't... after seeing @cumminfourya 's dilemma, I wondered if maybe one or both of mine were missing something to that effect.

Pre 2009 18.5" wsm's don't have the external heat shield.

This 14.5 heat shield/drip pan were originally used in Euro smokey joe golds, if I'm not mistaken.

imo the heat shield is window dressing...

Maybe somewhat helpful ..but heat rises...maybe somewhat comfirting if you setup on a wood deck..but if you habe ur wsm on pavers..i dont see much cook value in the heat shields

N congrats..i love my 14.5" wsm...these days she is mostly fired up for fish..sips on fuel and gets the job done

She def runs hot..so in only drop 4-6 coals topside to start and shut all dampers down initially to keep her down in the mid 200s....she runs much diff than the 18" wsm

The external heat shields are good for catching drips that would otherwise stain pavers

My wsm doesnt drip...only the door..but the bottom edge of the door ooening catches and dripping and it drops back inti the wsm...

Your wsm drips externally ...how?
