So my flexible bic long lighter ran out. Went to Home Depot a couple weeks ago and they had hundreds of scripto lighters. I didn't see any others so bought one for around $3. Used it twice and won't light. I was at a different store and saw some for 88 cents plus the scripto and no others.  I thought I'd get the 88 cent one since the scripto was junk. It worked once WTF. Had to resort to amazon and got one regular long bic and a flexible for $10. It's on order. Not sure why the stores in my area aren't stocking a lighter that works. I guess I know now. Save yourself money and find a bic.

If you shop at Costco I recommend the 4 pack of long neck lighters they stock during the warmer months. I have been going for 3-4 years on my first lighter out of the pack. I think they were not much more than $10-$12 for all 4.

I prefer Best Western (hotel, come to think of it, it's a pretty crappy place, maybe motel) matches and starter cubes.

All my cheap POS lighters work.

Jon

Get some Weber starter cubes. Those things light when you show them a picture of a match.

I've been using them on my non gas assist kettles and they are cheap enough that I'd rather use them than ball up charcoal bags or newspapers and deal with all the left over paper blowing around in the bowl.

You guys have sold me on the cubes. I've always used newspaper and have not tried them. Also, @AZmonsoon I'm going to get some matches. Funny, that should have been my first thought after lighter malfunction.

You can easily make firestaters at home.. takes less than 15 min for me and last 6 months. For lights I use a chef torch i had bought previously. Being using it for 4 years. I might get the long neck zippo next time ... is it any good?

Each purchase of a weber grill is a very special and rare occasion for me as they are rare to come by around here.

@pbe gummi bear , how is the zippo working?  Inquiring minds want to know

I picked this up at a local discount store for $4.99. Came with a refill cylinder of Butane and it has a built in bottle opener. LOVE this thing...threw the package away so no part #.

I had a couple of those BernzOmatics!
They were great.  Mine didn't have the bottle opener though.
I'll have to be on the lookout for them.

Dryer lint, TP and paper towel tubes, melted leftover candles and/or paraffin.
Pack the tubes with lint
pour in wax
let cool and slice into thick coins with serrated knife.

You can get 9 pounds of paraffin at big box craft stores for $25

I do a batch about every other year.  Great for camping and beach fires.

HAHA, I was always leary of using dryer lint for more the reason of there being hair (from your head) in it and it don't smell good when burning, NOW I WILL NOT be using dryer lint!!!!.....LOL

I was a big fan of the pube cubes for a long time, and then I tried the Weber lighter cubes...
Damn, those things just work, I don't think I'll be making pube cubes again
