Rotisserie question.

I like the SS rotisserie set from Onlyfire, but unfortunately they do not ship to Canada.  So I can not get it from Amazon.com for $99, but I could get it from Amazon.ca for $368.  :o  Talk about unfair.  Anyway, I could have it shipped to US address but never got around to actually ordering one.

Just today I scored a brand new SS Napoleon rotisserie kit 30" for a gas grill for like $20 usd. I think I could make this work on my spare 22" kettle. The question is, without the ring.... is it too close to the charcoal to be an effective rotisserie?  Maybe I can move the charcoal grate further down to the sweeper. Or go easy on the charcoal amount to compensate.  What do you all say?

Thanks!

I think if you start with less lit charcoal you'd be fine. Your cooking indirect still and with the meat always spinning I don't see how you'd toast it.

There is a member of this forum, who did what you are asking about. He drilled holes in the bowl, for the rotisserie rod to fit through. I seem to remember this member had/has good success with his. I can't remember who it was though...

You could use fire bricks to help protect the meat from too hot of a fire.

Thanks! That thread really helps. I somehow missed that one and was not aware if anyone tried. I will probably notch one side and drill the other just like on the Rotisserie ring. Also, just to be on a safe side, I will use only 1 charcoal basket, lay smaller charcoal grate almost on top of the sweeper to give more distance.  From that thread it looks like it will work out just fine.  I will experiment to gain best results without the ring.

@greenweb , here's what I did before I finally got a Weber one, I had originally had a metal shop cut this so I could make a pizza kettle copy... I did something different, So I was wondering what to do with this metal band I had... voila! a roti ring, I bought the spit rod and motor off of ebay... It did the job!!

Thanks! You just gave me few more ideas. 1. Buy some steel panels and make my own ring like yours.  2. I just got a kettle pizza. Wondering if I should cut a notch and a hole for the rotisserie on it and buy a smaller steel panel to block off the opening when using as a roti. So, it becomes duel purpose.  Of course, the 3rd option will be to drill and notch on the kettle without the ring.

Appreciate all for your input. I think I am good to go.  :)

Well! You gave me this idea here. When you mentioned about the kettle pizza copy made and using it for the roti.  Hummm... Why not use the kettle pizza as a roti set up also. Only issue I see is that the Kettle pizza ring might not be thick enough to support the weight with the big opening at the front. It could be blocked off when using as a roti with few bolt on screws on both sides. Might work or might not, I have to look into it. When using as a pizza oven....few extra holes on top not going to matter anyways.   Thanks for the idea.

the opening and strength, you might be right...  the ring I had was kinda flimsy, dont remember the gauge.  Once the lid is in place it helped keep it from going "out of round"... Lay the rod across the top of the kettle pizza and put some downward pressure on the rod and wiggle it, see if the KP ring feels wobbly... If not, I'd Go for it...and no, a couple holes for the rod aint gonna affect cooking a pizza..

Yes, I can buy it and have it shipped to my family member or many others I trust in the States and have it shipped to me in the future. But for now, I want to work with what I have. Never was a plan to do this until I scored a brand new gas rotisserie yesterday. The point of this thread was for me to understand if using the roti without the ring was possible as I have never used one or seen others do it before. Now, thanks to other members feedback and links, I think I could make this work actually not just one way but 3 different ways.
