@AZRaptor spotted a sweet firepit on Craigslist or Offerup a few months ago that I grabbed. The fire pit is pretty minty, but the handles needed some work. The knife is just a Old Hickory carbon steel knife that I've been using for years that was pretty nasty, blade all stained and needed a little love. Since I had everything out for the Weber handles I figured why not.

In progress

Beautiful finish and presentation. What did you do to make the blade that shiny?

Great work! Those handles look better than new.

What steel was used to make the knife?

Nice work.  Old Hickory knives are the best.  My butcher knife is my go to knife.  Holds an edge forever.  None of mine look like that one, though.  LOL

Looks like you turned that Ol' Hic into a New' Hic.
You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you get what you need

Even when new, my Ol' Hickory knives didn't look so good as that!

Every one on the rack is fresh out of the package. I received them as a gift recently. Loving them so far.

Oops, except for the biggest butcher... I used that one to carve the Christmas roast :)

Great work on the handles.  What an improvement!

What did you use on them?
Wanted: Burgundy 18"

Thanks

@Travis - Lots of various sand paper grades from maybe 60 grit to somewhere around 1500. Then buffer, buffing compounds, buffing wheels etc
@kettlebb - The blade is carbon steel so it's just gonna stain and patina again with use
@order66 - No real tips. The blade is gonna stain and patina as it's not stainless. Don't put it in the dish washer or leave it wet. On my pocket knives with similar blades I leave a little film of oil on the blades.
@Neil_VT00 - I just used a coat of cherry stain and about 4 coats of satin spar urethane because I already had both sitting on the shelf. I think most guys here go with spar varnish though.
