Pat Pending MT?

This is  a 1990 M Code MT recently scored for free on CL. The woman who posted the add said it was suppose to be for her son, but he said he did not want it. I could tell in our conversation how disappointed she was that her son did not want it. Originally I was going to resell it but I have decided to keep it and continue to stay in contact with her, sending pictures of the finished restoration and its future usage.

It was missing the lid thermometer but I was able to get a NOS Weber thermometer on Amazon. I am waiting delivery on a new one touch cleaning system.  I also will be retrofitting it with a ash catcher assembly. Straightened the handle with two whacks of a rubber mallet. Still have to work on the triangle and legs.

It has "Pat Pending" stamped on the thermometer housing on the lid.  I remember a similar picture posted a while back.  Am I to assume that Weber had applied for a patent for this housing and that was the reason for the stamp? @Craig - was this a one year only stamping on the MT? My 99 MT does not have this stamping.

@Cellar2ful. Um Jim, was that straw or grass or something in the bowl on that before pic?? Did you tell the owner, smoking on a weber didn't mean actually smoking grass on a weber...

Kiddin, nice score bud. You've got a blue family starting now!

Nice job cellar...great looking handles!

a patent pending kettle typically means it's stamped as such on the vent, whereas yours is stamped "M".

while i'm sure they had a patent pending on the thermo housing mount thingy, that's not typically what people mean.

I only use kettles with lid bales.

I should have acknowledged that a "Patent Pending" referral is usually meant to describe the 1969-1970 kettles. I was looking for a catchy subject title.  Since posting this topic, I have read the actual patent referenced in the WKC Master Touch History link. It was filed in 1987 and covered the lid housing, thermometer and lid bail.  The housings may have been stamped  from 1988 through at least 1990, as this blue one.  I was curious as to how many other years were stamped on the housing. Anyone out there have other year MT's with the Pat Pend stamp on the housing?

The credit for the handles go to Brian @zavod44.  They are high figured cedar. I just turn a screwdriver a couple of twists.

The blue EO (1995) SSP I just took possession of today has PAT PENDING stamped on the thermometer housing.

So at least from 1990 to 1995 the housings were stamped.  Thanks @haeffb

Also, EZ (1998) codes were not.

I was inquiring about the Pat Pending on the housing, when I scored my 1996 Minty Red MT just over a month ago.  http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/score-big-time-redhead-canadian-mt-(pat-pending-er-code)/

Yep @greenweb, your post is the one I was referring to and now remember it well.   So that makes the stamped thermometer housing year span 1990 to 1996 of both MT and SSP's. With your 1998 not being stamped @haeffb, Weber must have stopped stamping them in either 97 or 98.
