I've also been under the assumption that Kingsford Professional is a replacement for Kingsford Competition that I used last year, but not sure now.

Not quite new, as in 2016 .... Here is a thread from last year:

I don't recall or know if anyone has reported on using it.  I am still curious about it.
Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.

I've never seen it locally, and I am probably 90 miles from one of their manufacturing facilities.

I asked Kingsford about the difference between their professional briquettes and their competition briquettes.  This is what they said on July 1.

Thank you for reaching out to our team here at Kingsford. It is our pleasure to assist you.

Thank you for being a loyal customer and expressing your interest in our new products! Professional Briquets are an updated version of our Competition Briquets. Kingsford Professional Briquets are 100% Natural and are made with premium wood char for a hot, consistent burn.  Kingsford Professional Briquets' hotter temperature is great for searing delicious steaks and the consistent burn is key for smoking large cuts of meat.

I picked up a bag a couple weeks ago. It was on "sale" for $10 a bag a Sprout's. Regular price was $16.00 a bag... OUCH!!!  :o I haven't seen it anywhere else. Still trying to decide how to test it out.
