But the one thing I despise after grilling is cleaning up or emptying out the ash pan.

Is there any way someone here can make a steel wired  circular mesh that can be used as a charcoal holder while its main function is to trap all or most the burnt ashes before it hits the ash catcher or bottom bowl?

An invention like this seems like it would extend the life of the kettle while making clean up a breeze

There is already something out there to remedy this .... It's called .... A gas grill.

You owe me a new bottle of vodka, I just spit my drink all over everything.

It can be done.  Think of a fryer basket that catches burned ashes

Something like this? http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/she-was-standing-by-the-curb-what-legs-i-knew-i-had-to-have-her/ Either way you'd have to empty something and I'd rather just have to remove the ashpot vs. both grates and the internal ashpan.

Interesting video.

I'm sure something could be fabricated using EM (expanded metal).  EM comes in lots of different sizes and gauges.

I have fabricated charcoal baskets, and so have others using EM.  It's great stuff.

Never trust a skinny pitmaster or a man whose kettle for daily cooking is that clean. You may show up for some BBQ and wind up with a plate of tofu and kale.

Wrap inside of bowl in tin foil and then just ball up and chuck?
