How 'bout some vintage Rosewood? My son is a percussionist, and I restored a bunch of instruments for him over the years. I have a big box of marimba bars that are no longer tunable, so there they sit. Back in the day, marimba and xylophone bars were made from the highest quality rosewood - long before it was protected. Long story short, Brian took the challenge to make a few handles from the old bars, and I asked him to leave the holes in them to add character - I was not looking for perfection. (They are strung on a frame to allow them to resonate, each bar has two holes.) They turned out great, and my son was jazzed to add one to his Performer.
