Is this "cheating"?
« on: November 11, 2014, 03:54:58 PM »
I came into possession of an M code blue OTS a couple weeks ago.  Just got around to cleaning ol' girl up, with the idea of possibly selling in the future.  Its in really good shape.  No dings or real dents.  The sweep works/looks good.  The triangle was a bit rusty but naval jelly cleaned it right up.  The problem?  No ash pan.  I bought a new one and slapped it on one of my keepers, switching out the pan in the worst shape.  So, I've been scrubbing the crap out of this ash pan.  It's pretty stubborn.  Then I hit on the idea:  What if I did a decent job of sanding and then spray painted it?  I still have the silver paint from my fire pit stand...the color works for me:

BUT...is this cheating?  A breech of the WBC code?  Will I be ostracized from the community?

that's not cheating.  there's no evidence of remorse.
I only use kettles with lid bales.

"... The code is more what you'd call 'guidelines' than actual rules..."

Oh wait, sorry, that was the pirate code.
Now where did I put my WKC code book?
(Insert searching noises, rustling papers, etc. here)

Oh to hell with it! Paint it and call it a mod! ;)
A bunch of black kettles

Naw....people have painted triangles & such before.....not naming any names here (buckie, Craig, etc.) so there's no exact absolute code or anything.....just probably wouldn't do that with something really old.....

Reading the original post, I immediately thought of @Jeff  and his painted twists that look factory fresh.. I cant tell which are painted and which ones are just super clean, I also say go for it!

Exactly!

I painted the ash pan of an OTG thats mounted on my comp Red Master-Touch Cajun Bandit conversion, and it looked great for awhile.

Now this is cheating!

Sandblasting a rusty old SJS lid and painting it Red, knowing that finding an original are like a snowballs chance in Hell!

No shame in my game!

I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!

Don't know if that was cheating on that yellow SJ, not sure if that was the adjective I'm thinking of, but there better be a good explanation....
