I prefer to use natural earth-friendly methods whenever possible.

Helps to have a stream on my property.

hogsy came over for a beer and a perve

upon the opening of our second beer the discussion went to the originality of these lid handles

then upon further closer inspection it seems they are homemade

looks as if the original metal handle has rusted on the top external corners and old mate has cut himself some dowel and drilled himself a small hole through it and place a rod through and welder to the remains of the handle

So, about 10 minutes after Hogsy arrived?  :)

Looks like a well done repair.

The lid handle

After a few discussions with hogsy over numerous beers
It was decided that the lid handles are not original
And need to be changed to std

Ok get the grinder and head to the bone yard
Remove 2 tops of handles

Return to work bench (bonnet of car)
Grind out previous owners mod
And weld new tops on
Grind back
Hit with high heat black

20 mins later job done
