26" Ash Pan Help
« on: July 11, 2014, 06:04:03 AM »
I've decided that I want to make an ash pan for my 26" Chief.

I'm thinking about starting with a bowl of some kind and modifying it.

What I need is the dimensions of the original pan.

Overall width, depth and measurements of the slots.

Pics of a pan with a tape measure would be awesome.

I'm not to concerned with the material I use, but I want to try and match the shape as close as possible.

If I can find a good candidate bowl I will pass along any sourcing info and do a write up on the mods.

Rix, I know the 22" twist discs have the same contour as the bottom of a 22" bowl.

Guys with a 26" ashpan, can you check if it's contoured to the 26" or 22" bowl?

GL with this!

I know these aren't going to be too helpful, but its a place to start and see how it sits on the legs.  I'll try and measure up some pics later.

26" twist pan has got to be the single hardest part to find. I wish I had access to a metal shop for fabricating one.

if someone wants to draw up the details in solidworks or some other engineering software, I can hit some of the fab shops near me and get some quotes.

The metal working guy next to me said it'd probably cost $10 to make ;)

And seriously - if that's the case - i'll have a dozen or so made and sell them at cost.

Put me first in line if you get some of those made up.

In the meantime, I'm thinking of starting with a wok like this one at a local Asian market.

It's about 20" across and would most likely catch more ashes than an original.

Any chance you could get some 22 ashpans made, too? I have one kettle from '79 that was missing it and I didn't want to get the clip on style.

the wok is an idea I've had rolling around in the brain pan for awhile......might work real good !!!!

I have a throatless shear for cutting crazy stuff out like that.....could work for most of the cuts, but might have to switch to Dremel for the very tight angles..........

Just curious, were the originals spun or stamped?

Stamped. I don't see the spinning rings on them.
