Vinegar soak, Bar keepers friend, mechanical, self clean ovens. Many ways to remove rust. :-)

 I thought about the open ends before.....maybe a piece of small "C" channel, attached at the ends near the handle area, capping of the cut ends?

Same here, wire wheel in a hand held grinder. Does magic in minutes! Use caution and follow all safety rules, protective gear, etc.  Parts go flying, and it gets ugly fast.

If you don't have a grinder you can buy a wire wheel for your drill too. Best 5 I ever spent on my first kettle rehab.

Just watch out for those metal splinters... Nasty suckers!
