Another Handle Observation
« on: April 12, 2014, 12:45:46 PM »
If this has already been brought to light, then I apologize. Otherwise ...

I noticed a difference in the bowl handles.

Here ... different measurements. First, a 1995 EO code.

A 2011 AA code.

And, an MBH for more reference.

Curious and all. Maybe someone could shed some light on this. Thanks!  :D

That's exactly what I was thinking.
Perhaps some consumer input, and Weber made the adjustment.

I always thought the rounded-but-close handles dissipated heat OK but that the later ones would concentrate heat and so, NEEDED a handle.

I have never understand the theory behind the handles, I myself prefer the MBH look and feel. I mean
how many people actually move a kettle once the charcoal is dumped? Seems more than likely the change
was made for liability reasons. That's just my opinion I could be wrong.

The newer handles have tool holder hooks so that extra clearance may help. It could also be for manufacturing reasons. Personally I think they look ugly sticking out that far but it's not that big of a deal.

On the 26".

For the 22 ... Weber's site doesn't show a kettle handle with tool hooks.

My 2014 22 OTG came with the new tool hook handles. They are growing on me but I'll probably give them to my dad and put zavles on. He's not as much of a purist as I am.

The bowl handles changed from metal to the wood insulated straps late in 1980. The bowl straps were lengthened in 2010. The plastic bull horns handles came out for 2013. Im sure the bowl handles were changed away from metal in the early 80s for the same reasom the lid handles were changed to wood in the mid 60s. Too many people branding their palms. I can see why for the lid but who decides to drag a kettle thats already hot? Evidently too many people did it so Weber more than likely caved to consumer pressure and killed the MBH.
