If they are gunked up, a bit of WD-40 or simiilar helps a lot.

Also, the new OT parts are pretty cheap. Not even sure they are making them out of SS anymore.. It appears that all of them are aluminum or cheap galvanized parts.

Save your SS ones for the nicer grills!  8)

that's heartbreaking :(
which grills had SS before? just the performers?

Just the Performers and the OTG's Not sure what year they started, but it appears that 2013 is the end of them. I have PN for the SS, may have to call Weber and see if they still have some.

Excellent info in this thread !
Thanks to all who posted.

The new replacement H clip sweep kit looks like aluminized steel petals and clip.
The control arm looks to be SS.

I agree, but Stainless is forever!
Well, stainless provides a much longer service than plated carbon steel, that's for sure.
But....(all) stainless steel can and will rust if neglected.

QuoteCurious about aluminized steel.. Here's a read explaining it.

I think of aluminized steel as a sort of galvanizing, only finer where small parts can be plated without changing their dimensions drastically like conventional galvanizing can.

Thanks again, Heyjude for your contributions to this thread.

When I did the 2 redhead restores, I ordered sweepers from ereplace.
It came with instructions ... I decided to scan them for future reference and to help along the way.  :D :D

Thanks for posting this !

As it turned out, the thumb screw backed out very well.
I hit it with some heat (propane torch) and then drizzled on some Liquid Wrench which sweated in nicely.

The stainless "H Drive" set up from the OTG was a little persnickety due to built up crud I think.
I monkeyed with it, massaged it, held my mouth in various positions and then suddenly it made a "pop" as the control rod twisted out.
The H Dirive is the superior system IMHO.

Everything has been moved over to the Silver and the Silver is almost a Gold.
I'll need to fab a third handle and then it will be a Gold (wannabe).
Wannabe because it has the 3 wire triangle....the Gold triangle was kinda rusted.
