Digital Thermometer - wire from probe

Ok so maybe this is a stupid question, but what do you do with the wire from your probe?  Noticed tonight with some chicken on the grill most of the smoke was escaping where the wire ran under the lid. Is this a problem when low and slow smoking is going on?  Give me your thoughts.

I always just run my probes through the lid vent.
