What's so special about the Weber wire baskets?
« on: July 12, 2016, 06:22:02 PM »
I've seen a few post replies about the wire baskets that came with the 1st generation performers.

Is there something about them that is special?

I have a set with my SSP and want to make sure I am getting good use out of them.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Cheers, TheBigDawg

They breath 100X better than the cheap tin ones do so they get hotter and they hold more fuel.
You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you get what you need

They also hold the charcoal closer to the food grate

They are way more heavy duty than the current sheet metal ones.

I have two different sizes of the older wire charcoal baskets. One set has a smaller footprint and almost touches the grill grate. The other set has a larger footprint and more clearance from the cooking grate (similar in size to the current stamped steel ones). I haven't measured the volume of the two, so not exactly sure which holds more fuel. My preference is the shorter set, with the larger footprint. Both have great airflow.

I like the nesting of the newer stamped ones. They store smaller and don't get as rusty.

If you do a ebay search for "weber wire basket" you will find them.  Kind of pricey, but they are new.  I bought some last fall in the $30.00 range off ebay.  I do like them much better than the tin ones.

+1. The wire baskets are also slightly too tall for an 18.5" so the stamped ones are more versatile.

Do you have a pic, @Ken Mc ? Won't that playing just burn off right away since the heat is so high?

I don't have pics yet, o would have to clean them. And no problem yet with burning. They do the nickel on headers too, and I know those get hot.... lol

these were already rusted when I got them, so I just sand blasted them and a quick flash of nickel. held up pretty good for being 5 years old.
