High heat sealant
« on: August 20, 2015, 01:10:16 AM »
Has anyone here used high heat sealant such as fireplace sealant on a smoker or kettle mod?  Is it safe to cook with after it cures?

I have when I did mods to a Brinkmann smoker.

It worked okay, but I ended up replacing it with RTV sealant, as it has better water resistant properties.  After it cures, it's fine.

I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-81160-Form-A-Gasket-Silicone-Sealant/dp/B000FW2NB2 on my smoker.  They claim it's food safe.

From Permatex:

Permatex has a High Temp. RED RTV Silicone Gasket Maker and is safe to
use around food products .It is certified
NSF/ANSI STANDARD 51 Food Equipment Materials ...( indirectly around
food )Temp. max. is 600 F continuous and 650 F intermittently ... The
Ultra Copper is not NSF

When I built/painted my mini WSM I used high heat engine paint. I painted my design and then they made a high heat sealer. I bought all the paint/sealant from Autozone. I obviously didn't paint the inside of the cooker but have had no troubles.
