Hey Weber history nerds, can we talk about what grates came with which kettles over the years? When was the hinged grate introduced? What changes were there to the solid cooking grate? Thanks!

My first new Weber (1981) had a hinged grate, still use it. You don't have to add a lot of coal to sear, just raise the grate up closer to the cooking grate. They had 3 settings, I have hinged others over the years.  Works Great.

I've noticed that the Gas kettles came with SS grates both cooking and charcoal and the two I have, have the handles on the grate that won't rest on the bowl handle
I'm only 2 or 3 kettles away from being that creepy guy down the street with all the Webers

I thought the Stainless grates were non-Weber.

If it breathes, we can cook it!

Weber used to sell a 22" SS grate. They discontinued it.. It was around $30 if I recall.
Not sure why they killed..
I don't care if you don't like my Avatar, its there for me..

Still looking for a 22 that was made to be used with a Cast Iron Genesis grate that sat inside the frame. I believe @Hogsy  and a few others have one.

I am not 100% certain but I believe the 22 size flip up grates began (originated) with the One Touch Plus models of 1988. As for non flip, anything from the late 50s to prior to 1983-84ish was the old style solid grates with the straightened yet slightly angled handles. Around the 83-84 period the handles were bent inward somewhat. I can get pictures later for comparison. In the 1990s the first thinner grates came out (BAR B KETTLE, later the OTS and now the "Original Kettle") came to be, at first the had the rounded or arched shape handles, by 2010 they resemble the flip up handles only thinner.
