Gourmet Grill Burnt!

My new grill, plated steel, actually caught fire (flames). It is the Gourmet Grill from Weber.

The grill was brand new, and I seasoned it with a very light coating of vegetable oil. The right hand side caught on fire, and now it is a very dark blue. I think the plating actually burnt off.

Has this happened before? I called Weber, they said NEVER oil the grate...NEVER!

Is there a 100% stainless steel option on this grill?

Your grate is fine. I wouldn't worry about it. No way the chrome burnt off

Weber is sending me a new grill-grate, no cost to me. Great service! It seems like I have heard about issues with the plating on these?

Your grate will discolor. It's what they do. Embrace the seasoned in color.

Not sure why you would have oiled the grate in the first place, but it would be the oil that burned, not the metal or plating which are non flamable.

Guess I've been watching too many America's Test Kitchen shows, where they always oil/season the grate with oil prior to grilling.
Now I know better!

oil the food, not the grate.  heat the grate, though.
I like my Kettles like my coffee....strong and black.
