Scraping grates. Yay or nay?

I never scrape my grates and I am wondering if I am just lazy. I'll never use a wire brush, but I do have a cedar scraper I COULD use.

Talk me out of my no-scrape ways. (Or did me deeper!)

I usually just burn off any gunk & MAYBE use a spatula to scrap any residue.  If it is a grate that has been sitting a while & has some rust flaking off, I will used a crumpled up ball of aluminum on it. 

I paid $5 for a wood paddle that is really designed for maybe restaurant or cafeteria cooking with a really, really long handle and have tried that out a number of times so I got the grooves burned in.  I sometimes use that WHILE burning off & it is ok, but not that big a deal.

I just scrape with a spatula when hot.  My buddy never scrapes and he always has too much buildup for my liking.

many posts about wire brush bristles coming loose and not so good news when it ends up on someones plate.

i burn the mess off the grates and then use wooden scraper.

heat is the best sterilization tool

The wire brush thing....I keep thinking you'd have to have a very dirty grate with cooked on sludge to catch any steel fibers, as well as a scraper that's at the end of its lifespan.  Anyways, I use a weber grill brush with the metal scraper, but let the fire do most of the work.

I use a wood paddle that's pre-grooved on a hot grate. I like it. I also like using balled up tin foil in some cases.

I have used a metal scraper for years and years. I clean the grate before cooking, when the grate is heated up. Never had a problem with rogue metal fibers.

I just started using the Weber scraper since it came with my first CGA score. It's well built and I have yet to lose a bristle. I'm careful to not mash it into the grate and wait till it's nice and hot and the food/sauce is baked on.

I also have the wooden scraper and like it but it doesn't deep clean like the stainless brush can.

Big Balled up HD Foil when the Grate gets preheated.  Works for me.  I too have the wooden scraper.  I use that one sometimes too.  The Wire brush???  I use that one on the CI Grate.  No real reason why... I just do it...

Eh... ya know... 6 of 1, half dozen of the other....

Lets just say I have acquired a few Kettles.  Big and small.   Vintage and New...  Some say I have a problem.  I find the Kettle, buy the Kettle, USE the Kettle...No problem...

I personally don't see the point in brushing a grate with a dirty brush. At least a spatula can be cleaned every time and actually does a pretty good job of cleaning if you hold it an angle and get the sides too.

Ok, I used my previously unused cedar grill scraper to clean up my grates today. I'm officially not lazy anymore

....for now.
