The ones I used to use were in a foil top pack. Is that the ones?  They smelled like lighter fluid and I liked it. I was trying to light something after all. It completely burns up so how is this an issue?

It should definitely only take one cube and be easy to light. That is an issue.

Dollar store sterno.
Lost count of how many starts
I get with a can.
5-6 minute burn
Lift the chimney
grab can with tongs and
plop on the lid.

This is a pretty good idea that I may use if I fail to get some clearance-priced cubes this fall, but it does have the same problem Performers do- the need to be shut off!  :P

Cubes are set it, forget it, and they can even be cut in half and still light a chimney.

I have been doing this for years, works like a champ!
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

I take no credit, I learned it here.
Probably from you, @hawgheaven

Am I really the only one who still uses a couple of sheets of crumpled up newspapers in my charcoal chimney?
I know fewer people buy them, but you could just grab some old ones when you visit your mom (like I do).

That's the way I used to light the chimney. Took too long, and I didn't like the ash from it floating around...

^^^^ This.

With the cubes there is no ash, no fail. Light cube. Place chimney over it. Done. Go prep food.  :)

No lighter fluid smell if you use paper.

Been using these since I ran out of Weber cubes at the same time as my local Ace.

we still get sale flyers on newsprint delivered to our mailbox a couple of times a week so there's no shortage of well newspaper or whatever you want to call it to stuff in the bottom of a charcoal chimney. I seriously don't understand kneading special fire starter cubes for getting a charcoal chimney going it is completely confusing to me because it seems counterintuitive to the purpose of the chimney.

I really like these because they don't smell or disintegrate when handled/tossed around and get the job done.

I don't use newspaper anymore because it ashes like crazy. My go to now is a cooking oil-soaked paper towel.

I wonder if the odor might come from the end or the beginning of a batch at the factory.

One other thing I've used in the past for the grill and still do for the
woodstove is buy a wax log and cut it into 1"  chunks with a serrated
knife.  Good 8 minute burn. Next to no residue.
Forgot all about that until I started back to splitting wood for this winter.

Funny how weird shit pops into your head while you're doing something mindless
like cutting the grass, etc.
