I go through the top vent then stab it into an onion sitting on the grill so it's at the same height as the food I'm cooking.

I found it a real pain on the WSM to put the curved temp probe through the grommet and also taking it back out quickly through the grommet during the cook. It felt like the temp probe would come apart with the tugging and pushing to get it through the slit.
As some of the other guys did I cut a notch in the middle section so all you have to do is just set the wires into the groove and your good to go.

Can't hurt the wires. I used the iGrill every day and am not careful with it at all. Bowl and lid. . Like everyone else, save for the thermapen guy
