fixed my loose vent issue. drilled out the old rivet ground down and rounded  the square set on a carriage bolt. and viola


added a vent heat damper handle

my most used tool I own besides a 14mm wrench, my dremel 3000 and a grinding stone.

Nicely done. You can also chuck the bolt in a drill and use a file to smooth it up.

Another way to do this attachment would be to use a jam nut and plain washer instead of the wingnut and lock washer. Since the two nuts used in a jam nut configuration only bear against each other (and not against the washer) you can adjust the first nut to give you the tension you want (to allow the vent to be rotated), then tighten the second nut against the first, locking them together so that they don't loosen, yet maintaining the amount of tension you set so that the vent rotates easily.

Way to go! Can't stand rusted rivets or gunked up vents. Never liked the screw slots, your mod looks much nicer.
