I seem to remember seeing pics of a 22 that had the
vent beside the handle like on a 18 instead at the end of the handle? The reason I'm asking is that I've spotted what I think is a metal top handle 22 but the vent is set up like a 18. There's a good bit of distance from where I've seen it so it might be my eyes fooling me into believing its a 22. Is there any sort of general consensus on these set ups?

What you're describing sounds like a Happy Cooker if I remember correctly. I think Sears sold them. I saw this on CL today which I think is one

Yes I found the thread I was looking for, the pre 62 grills had the vent beside the handle.
