How do you use it? Starting the fire, stoking it to keep the temp up, or both?

Both.  For my kettle getting my coal snake started
It is great.   And I use it as a stoker for my offset
Smoker.  Can't be beat.  Heavier than I thought
Really well built. Amazon wants like 75$
eBay had them less than half that..
