Where can I get a 17 7/8 inch cooking grate for SJP?
« on: February 01, 2015, 09:49:39 AM »
I got a DA code Smokey Joe Platinum "Jumbo Joe", aka "Outrider" a couple months a go at an estate sale.  Just got around to cleaning 'er up yesterday.  I was disappointed to find out that the cooking grate found in the standard 18 incher is *just a bit* too small for this very cool cooker.

Suggestions?

I got mine from Weber. Pissed me off the 18.5" grates don't fit!
I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!

Congrats on landing an old school Jumbo Joe, Stu!  They are really sweet.

The Weber Mothership hopefully still has those top grates.  There's a thread here with parts numbers if you need them:

http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/parts-numbers-for-the-jumbo-joe/msg51154/#msg51154

Warning, though: the prices quoted are from the glory days of 2013 when Weber factory parts were cheap, and the CS people seemed eager to throw in free shipping...

Is the JJ top grate the same size as a 22" charcoal grate? I vaguely remember that being the case.

Nope.  Close, but still too small.

Has anybody ever found a cast iron grate that will work in the Smokey Joe Platinum? I will probably order the 70605 since my old one is pretty beat after 8 years and somewhere between 750 to 1000 grillings but I would sure love a C.I. grate.

Nice cleanup, Stu.

The 18.5" WSM's lower cooking grate is the 22's charcoal grate.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch
