Title: Smokey Joe Meet and Greet!
Post by: harris92 on July 29, 2013, 03:28:20 PM
This evening I had a Smokey Joe meet and greet with Ed.  I wish it could have gone on longer.  He brought over 4 of his older small ones (2 Galley Ques and two straight leg Smokey Joe's).  Yes, the old straight leg red is the one advertised on Craigslist in Arizona a few months back.

Anyway, I am an average photographer (at best) but hope you enjoy the pictures!

Thanks for sharing Harris. Do you have a favorite? Did any of them get hot? Believe it or not I like the black galley the most. There is just something right about that tiny vent on top. :D

The black Smokey Joe really stood out to me.  The metal handle along with the straight legs caught my attention.  I wonder how old it is?  Maybe mid 1960's????

It is funny, Ed had other items in the back of his vehicle I recognized from local Craigslist.  He is a machine....

I just realized why I was thinking those offset handled SJs looked vaguely familiar: they are nearly identical to curling stones! Perhaps a new winter sport emerges from WKC. Find a frozen lake, skid a few SJs across the ice, have a few Labatt's and cook up some Perch. Nice way to spend an afternoon.

Oh wait, maybe the winner gets the losers' Joe! (Do kettles have pink slips?)

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a Straight Leg Joe?

Sent from another planet using Mental Telepathy.

Jo, it's the SJ with stick legs in the pics and not the bent metal kind. Pics 2 3 and 5 shows it the best

Thanks for posting those pics Harris.

Jocool...here is a photo of my pair.  You can see a little better how these legs are constructed.

Nice looking group! If you get enough together in one place, do they multiply?  ;)

Anything metal top handled should be pre 1964. Now that usually applies to the bigger kettles, the SJ's could have been a little later. BTW I've never seen a red wooden offset handle with the straight leg style, must be a mid-late 1960s model? Jeff's brown one has the next leg style with the locking triangle frame but precedes the folding leg style.

Very nice smokeys! It looks like you guys had a fun meet. Harris you should have dropped the red and yellow there to make it look fuller and ad more color. :)

Ha! No, but my Mom was born in Anchorage and grew up in Canada. I grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Close enough eh?
