I find the outrider setup to be a little more difficult to keep the coals hot with the side vents instead of from underneath. The best way was to bank the coals high against the side by one open vent for the sear zone but I don't really want to do that due to cracking the porcelain previously as I'm sure a lot of you are aware of
I found a single charcoal basket to give too small a zone and the sides of it were blocking off the air
So I took a punt on this charcoal basket for a 25" komado. Nobody was making a basket like this for the 18.5, only a 22. The measurements looked good so I thought what the hell.
Anyway, it turns out it fits beautifully, with a 15mm gap around the sides for airflow, I'll now be able to bank the coals quite high while keeping them away from the porcelain. Comes with a divider too so you get a really good amount of cool zone
I cut the top handles off it and as another bonus it now fits a regular 18.5" cooking grate by letting it sit on top of the basket, which opens up more opportunities (the outriders unique grate limits options over here as nobody makes an upgraded version this side of the pond)

Link to the one I bought which was on sale the other day at 20% off. They probably sell something similar in the US I'm sure, Just thought worth sharing if anyone else wanted one, will also be good for any 18.5" webers

That's a nice basket setup, should work well in any 18" kettles.
I haven't heard of banking coals causing cracked porcelain on any black kettles, I believe that is typically a problem with colored kettles.

Interesting! I never knew that, but now you mention it, I've often banked them in my black GA's doing the snake method and it's never been an issue, it was as you say a coloured kettle back in the day before I knew better. I didn't fancy risking it with the outrider though as this is the only one I've ever come across over here up for grabs!

I like this rig! Very nice.

@jcnaz , I have rescued mainly black kettles, and I have seen at least 1 or 2 that had some wicked crazing on the bowl.
Interesting setup, I like it!
That set up looks good. I have been putting coals on the side for years on my black kettle and have not noticed any problems on the wall and since I have it in a table , I also put the coals on the same side every time when I'm doing indirect. I didn't realise that it was an issue.

Generally what you get when banking.... Weber replaced this bowl in 2021 and the new one is still in the box in my attic. I cook pizzas and use the vortex on this one so the abuse continues. ; )
I have a few thin fire bricks, next time I bank, I will use them as a precaution

Interesting piece of equipment. Looks like it should work really well.

I like your style ! !
This is a really good setup which I used last night for the tomahawk for both indirect and direct, no risk of crazing with this! Of course It's only for the 22 and would be useless with the side vents! I'd leave it in all the time but it does reduce the 22 down to pretty much an 18.5

I unwittingly picked up an outrider several years ago advertised as a jumbo joe. I almost never use it though; only when we picnic. I didn't realize think about the potential issues, but I am going to look into that setup.
Thanks.

Joes are probably much better at airflow but I love the cool/rare factor and the deep bowl of the outrider. If they weren't so rare over here I'd drill some holes and put a lower vent in like I did with my SJP
