Title: Weber compact chimney for 18" kettle?
Post by: K4NorthHaven on June 24, 2023, 09:31:24 AM
Is the Weber compact chimney too small for the 18.5 kettle? I figured it was time to upgrade from my Folgers coffee can chimney. We cook for 2 on our 18" original kettle.

First off, welcome to the Forum K4NorthHaven.

I have the compact Weber chimney and it's the perfect size for use with an 18.5" kettle.   Per my 1980's Weber owner manual, the 18.5" kettle requires 16 standard briquettes for each side for indirect cooking. Lighting the charcoal using a compact chimney, 32 to 35 briquettes fit in the compact chimney.  Any more than that will spill over the top.

Perfect. I've been using a Folgers can with holes drilled on four sides and it holds about 40 briquettes depending on what I can get my hands on but I only fill it to the top indented ring which is about 32 or so.  Thank you for the quick reply Cellar2ful!

Hello and welcome.  You can invert the cone inside the chimney to increase its capacity if needed.

You should be fine I sometimes use one with the 22" when I am starting smoker coals or a small load for just a couple of burgers.
