Title: Found a Chief in the wild
Post by: 29tx on April 18, 2021, 01:40:00 PM
Not sure if the seller is a member on here, but if so, thanks again! Picked this up on Offerup today, 26" pre patent Chief from what I can tell. Picture is the one from the ad, haven't gotten it put back together yet. Don't know much about these, how rare are they? I have a Fleetwood back home that's on a 22" leg set up so I really snagged this for the legs, not sure what I want to do with the bowl yet. Needs some work but is solidish, has a hole by a grate strap. What do yall think?

It was on offer up here in Phoenix metro area. I was hesitant because of the hole... you snooze you loose. Nice one!

Thanks guys, I'm excited about it. Will probably cook on it a time or two before deciding if I want to hang on to it or trade the bowl for something. Here's the grill I'll putting the parts on once I get back to Texas.

bbqking - yup that's the one! I figure the hole is why I was able to get it. Didn't know you were out in the Phoenix area. I'm out here for work, loving Arizona.

Couple more pictures, not sure about the holes at the grate straps. That seems to be a pretty involved repair.

I once had a Chief with holes around the grate straps.  It cooked like a champ.  Oil the porcelain pops and let 'er rip!

I've had good luck using JB Weld on holes in the bowl.  It should only be applied on the outside.   I've tried to not place any coals on the same side as the patch.  This was on an aristocrat, and the hole was in the same location.

@29tx

Here is a thread on how @1spacemanspiff repaired a hole in a tabbed kettle with JB Weld.
