Title: New grates on classic Weber?
Post by: ditkafanchris on October 26, 2020, 12:57:02 PM
Hey gang,
I just found a beautiful 18 1/2 redhead, part of the '69-'72 series, and am cleaning her up.  The handles are gone, and she has a few battle scars, but I'm cleaning her up now.  I'm going to order handles soon from Zavod, from this site, but was wondering general thoughts on putting in a new grate, instead of just cleaning up the old one.  I'm not well informed if that is considered as sacrilegious, as far as restoration.  Thanks for any input!  Got Lucy at a garage sale for $10, I'm sure you can imagine how fast my heart was beating, haha

Sweet score! I don't have any issues with new grates on old grills.   I think it makes them pop.

I see no problem using modern grates on an older kettle.
Keep the original if they are in good condition.

She's beautiful, congratulations!  Mine is a '73-'74, very similar.  I got a set of KillaGrilla SS charcoal and cooking grates and couldn't be happier.  My charcoal grate was beyond, but I kept the cooking grate and use it in a JJ every now and then.  The SS grates are amazingly easy to clean and will never rust.  I also recommend the cooking grate with a large hinged side that works well with an SNS stainless charcoal basket.  Have fun!

New grates will fit, no problem.
