Title: New grill, just start cooking?
Post by: jeremiahmercier on June 13, 2019, 05:58:31 PM
Got a brand new kettle, is the general consensus to just start cooks, or do some burn ins or seasoning. It's a Crimson Premium kettle, wife also got me the GBS with the steak iron and griddle, and a bunch of pieces, does any of it need seasoned?

Most people usually run a load of charcoal at high heat at least once.  This is supposed to burn out any kind of chemical or residue that might be in the grill after assembly.  After it cools and you clean the ashes out, then you are ready to fire it up again and cook.

Anything that is cast iron does need some seasoning usually unless it is preseasoned.  I would recommend doing some youtube to learn out how to season and care for it.  I wouldn't recommend leaving it outside or anywhere where humidity is high.

I do a burn in, a full chimney and I let it burn all the way out and then I cook

Yes, a burnout like @ReanimatedRobot said should be fine.  Enjoy the new kettle!

I didn't do burn ins or seasoning on my toaster, oven, waffle iron, pots, pans, or any of my Weber toys bought new.  These things are made cook
with and aren't caked with packing grease or dripping with machine oil in my experience.

Wipe the grates and fire it up. That's just me though.

I have that very same Crimson model. Yer gonna love it! When I got mine, I just started cooking on it, no "burn-in" other than lighting the coals for the cook.

Is anyone else wondering how many kettles can fit on that porch?

May I suggest a mat under the grill so you don't make a mess on your porch? The guys suggested mats to me and I bought a couple on the 'bay.

Beautiful grill and grate lookin' porch and yard!

That is a trailer that was used as a float in a nearby city for that VA, what you see is a double sided bench going the length of the trailer, which is 20ft L by 8 ft wide. My plans are to remove all that wood (in bad shape), cut the rear and dove-tail it down, raise the spring hangers (lower the trailer) and flip the axles to top of leafs. Would be easier to haul tractor and attachments than current utility tralier. I do have a vertical 55gallon drum smoker in that large metal structure with the 5th wheel though.

Mat is a must, and will be this week. I've got a thread in the mod section as well, but I will be building a table as well as buying a second kettle next month. The table will hold both kettles. We also will be buying some more patio furniture to help fill up the deck, we have a small set behind where I took the photo.
