Title: How much rust is too much?
Post by: TMO84 on April 16, 2019, 10:04:35 AM
Hi all,
Scored my first Weber kettle for free on the side of the road today. Upon getting her home  I realized she has a lot of damage and rust to the bowl (I believe the enamel is pitted and chipped) and to the cover. There are no holes, however, and was wondering if this kettle is salvageable? Provided I will keep it dry etc etc.

Thanks all!

Looks pretty clean, I'd cook on it.

A little Simple Green with a nylon brush,
a quick rinse and fire her up!

Sounds like something my first boss would have said about hookers.

Headers or a different version, seems applicable for either

For the rust on the inside of the bowl, you can effectively season it like cast iron.  Get some oil on the rust and run it hot with no food to season.

Hello and welcome.  It looks like you rescued a One-Touch Platinum which can definitely be salvaged.   Note the stainless steel sweepers are still in working condition.  Shouldn't be too hard to restore.

If the rust rots through the bowl. That's too much.

Thanks for the replies. The picture is from after using simple green and some soap and hot water. Rusting and pitting on inside and outside of bowl. Again, no rust through (yet) but want to ensure if I am gonna spend $80 on new grates, cover, one touch, etc I will be able to prevent rust through. Simple as putting down some oil and keeping it dry? Excited to fire her up, my WSM is jealous!

If you're going to spend 80..just get the 22 inch weber new ...otherwise ...its not a beauty contest...fire it up! Keep on grillin'

What grates are you getting? And even if it rusts through just find another 20 dollar weber and move your stuff to it.

I was able to score a HC a couple of weeks ago in pretty good shape. Decided instead of spending a lot of time trying to get the grate worthy for meat, I went to Home Depot and picked up a Weber 22' hinged grate for $25. Not sure how long it will last, but it is a Weber grate, and gas been great for the three cooks so far.  A lot less than spending $80 to get the pit up and running.
