It seems that some time since 2013, when I got my performer, Weber redesigned the ash catcher to release with a squeeze on the wire handle, instead if the awkward twist and drop motion .
How well does the new one work? Is it worth about $35 to upgrade?
some like it, some do not
i find it a bit awkward and prefer the gen2 and beyond twist off can
Preferred the new style "squeeze" originally, but as I've acquired (& used) many "twist" ash bucket kettles, I definitely have found them to be better. Have found that I can't always get it set in place w/o visually aligning.

A silicone handle cover for a cast iron skillet slid over the bucket handle makes it easier to squeeze the newer type.
I like that idea.
Dresses it up a bit too.

Comes in colors too.
Lodge want $7 each for the same thing.
Going to put different colors on the ash pan and the damper.
Maybe that will keep me from trying to adjust the vent
with the ash pan handle!! Doh.

You da man Joe!!!
Apparently, you slide your's in & out way more than me. I still need to double check to make sure I don't miss the holes.

I have both , and I have to kneel down to check every time for both. I like the twist more because I feel it's more secure
Twist fella here. I hate the squeeze thing. Hard to get it lined up.
Only problem I've had with the twist
is when the bowl ring got out of round.
'Bout never got that thing trued up.
I prefer the original twist on style. The newer squeeze type can not only be challenging to line up but are not the best for anyone with arthritis in their hands.
I prefer the twist style also but lately I've been cooking on an OTS and I don't really miss the ash pot.

I don't like the look of the new one.
Hate the new style gave mine away to a buddy because it annoyed me

OTS is probably my favorite cooker in the 22 size. Simple and great. No twist or squeeze to worry about.
Also, there's ultimately less ash to deal with because half of it will be blowing around your patio

Votes are in. Weber take note. Now go off and redesign something else without asking first.

Yeah, like taco bowl handles or some other shit.
Idiots
Sorry, I apologize for Weber bashing. In fairness Weber was probably pressed to make the lid handle safer. And I'm sure they were trying to improve the ash ring/pot.
