Title: Question about "shorty mod" kettles
Post by: Mike in Roseville on July 28, 2017, 10:09:38 AM
 I have often wondered are there any advantages, other than sheer aesthetics, to "shortened" 18's and 22's? I mean they look cool, but I can't imagine they are all that comfortable to cook on or wheel around as one would have to hunch over quite a bit (unless placed on a table).

The only thing I can think of is you wouldn't have to break it down for space reasons (and lower center of gravity) when transporting in most types of vehicles.

Anything else?

@mikeinroseville ,  I made mine as a combo cooker/ fire pit for camping.. after a little snafu at a campground. Plus the cool factor.

Ahhhh....ok. Didn't think about it being a portable fire pit.

Sit in beach/camp chair, open another beer, reach to the side, slide lid back, flip steak, replace lid, sigh contently and drink more beer.

@demosthenes9

That was something I thought of as well. However, as a parent of a 2 year old and 2 month old, I immediately dismissed that and considered it impractical. Lol...I often forget that people have time to actually "sit" and cook in such a fashion. I will say, it sounds like a fun way to cook!

Maybe I'll try it out someday!

I'm with you Mike. My oldest will be 2 in a couple weeks and our youngest is 2 months. I'll make a midget one of these days but I have enough fun teaching the oldest that the grill is hot.

Shorties are cool looking, butt with my old ass, I don't see it happening. Too much bending. Plus, I cannot sit and cook. Just can't.

Love my raised 2 foot garden tho!

The difference in height between a regular 22" and shorty 22" is less than 6 inches.  I'm measuring between the two bowl lips.

Im 5'8" and I use mine with long utensils. Works just fine for me when I need the portability. I HATE breaking down full size grills. Not because of the effort, but because of the wear and tear on the leg friction fit.
