Title: Bad news: no stubbs sale at Lowe's this MDW
Post by: CharliefromLI on May 17, 2017, 05:18:43 AM
I was Lowe's last week to grab some stubbs at full price since I ran out before my usual stock up sale for Memorial Day . I saw they had Royal Oak briq's by front door. My Lowe's never carried it before so that was my first red flag.

I'd been meaning to try RO briqs so I grabbed a bag of RO and Bag of stubbs and mixed in smoker. To try out.

Well now I have my confirmation. The Lowe's MDW sale is on and there is no stubbs on sale, but RO is $4/bag.

I even reached out to Lowe's directly and this was the response:

So for those who have significant experience with both RO briqs and Stubbs briqs, are they comparable? Is embers and RO briqs the same? HD carries embers is it the same quality rebadged or Lower quality product?

Stubbs is my go to especially for my WSM so the no sale is a bummer for me.

Never tried RO-branded briqs, but was under the impression that they made Embers.  Embers is great for the price,  but the briqs are small in comparison to Stubbs and tiny in comparison to Weber.

If I was short on fuel and had to choose Embers vs KBB, I'd choose Embers, with Stubbs as my preferred brand.  Also as others have said, LOVE everything about Weber but the price.

I've wanted to try the RO briqs for a while. Think I'll stop by and pick up a few bags. Thanks

Back to the subject ... I prefer Stubb's over RO briqs.  In fact, I prefer KBB over RO briqs, but that's JMO.

Based on price or solely on performance? I feel like KBB leaves a ton of ash and the nasty start up smoke from additives are major drawbacks for me.

I like the K Comp so far for regular grilling, but I have not used it slow and low in the wsm or in a snake yet.

First thing that came to mind for me....

As for Stubbs not being on sale, that sucks. I stopped at Lowes today to grab something and noticed the RO briquettes stacked out on their main aisle next to some $99 OTS/OK kettles on display. I may have to try these. I've only used the RO hardwood so far. Ace here in town quit carrying  Stubbs and that bummed me out.

Yeah.....I tried RO Briquettes a couple times. Was not impressed. MacEggs is correct....KBB is better. Suck it up and pay the price for Stubbs if it that important.

Sorry guys, but the RO is a PRE Memorial Day sale Only good until the 24th or While Supplies Last.
My guess is they will have regular K sale priced and competing with Home Depot..
Get it while you can! I've never seen Stubbs on sale over Memorial Day Weekend?

Stubb's and RO are an apples and oranges comparison.
Stubb's is an all  hardwood charcoal briquette, held together with a corn starch binder..
Royal Oak Ridged Briquettes contain hardwood char and mineral additives (anthracite coal, limestone, borax) similar to Kingsford Blue Bag.
Embers Briquettes are RO Briquettes packaged exclusively for Home Depot.
Royal Oak makes an excellent all hardwood briquette called Chef's Select, but it is usually sold through commercial restaurant supply companies. If you have access to a Do it Best Hardware store they can order it for pickup.
